If you have a newborn or infant waking all night, planning shifts with your spouse/partner is one of the best ways to ensure your baby is safe AND each of you are able to get a consolidated chunk of sleep

👉🏻The shift I find to be the most realistic and sustainable is 9pm-2am and 2am-7am which gives each parent 5 hours that they are responsible for getting up with baby

This way the other parent can sleep without interruptions and one of you isn’t completely sleep deprived! Of course you will likely still sleep during some of your shift, it just may be more broken up

While I understand this isn’t an option for everyone, it can really help to keep baby safe and ensure one parent isn’t falling asleep while holding baby, during feedings, etc.

Keep in mind if you are breastfeeding and need to feed when it isn’t your shift, your husband or partner can bring baby to you to feed and then take baby back so you can sleep

Ultimately you should try to get to the root of the night wakings but this can be in place as you’re figuring it out!

While holidays are a sweet time filled with traditions old and new, spending time with family and friends and enjoying all the sweets, it can be a stressful time for parents trying to juggle all of the festivities while also managing their baby or toddler’s sleep.

And while we do not recommend throwing all of your schedules and routines out the window for this season, we do want to remind you that it is okay to have some flexibility during this special time.

Here at My Sweet Sleeper we believe in something we called the 80/20 rule; especially during travel! 80% of the time we encourage you to stick to your child’s flexible schedule, following age specific awake windows and having your child sleep in a consistent environment.

However, 20% of the time, give yourself permission to be “off track!” Perhaps that looks like naps on the go, or missing a nap all together, having a later bedtime, etc.!

🚗 When you are traveling during the holidays you want to be conscious not to push your child too far off of what they are normally accustomed to, but you also want that flexibility to enjoy the festivities as well.

This might mean you allow a car nap or two, and accept a later bedtime some nights. But it also might mean that you declined to participate in an activity or you excuse yourself early in order to get your kiddos down at a semi regular time. It’s all about finding balance and what works best for you and your child!

I’m a mom/bonus mom of seven and the hardest transition for me was going from 3 to 4 kiddos!

This is probably not the case everyone, but in our situation we had two older kids (9 and 7) and a 2 year old in the house (who is a family member we fostered) when our daughter was born (now 5yo)

I think this transition was the hardest because not only did we have a newborn and a toddler, but our older kids were in completely different stages and were still young enough that they were quite self sufficient (although they were good helpers).

It also felt SO hard because she was born in January in the middle of winter and I felt stuck at home and definitely not brave enough to leave the house with the kids on my own.

Had the age gaps been different, this transition might not have felt so hard. Since then 4 to 5, 5 to 6, and 6 to 7 have all felt about the same level of chaos 🤪

If so, this could be separation anxiety! This is a common, normal phase in development that often starts around 8 months, although we usually see that separation anxiety peaks in early toddlerhood, around 14- 18 months.

Here are some signs to look out for:

More frequent wakeups throughout the night

Strong preference for certain caregivers

If your baby is up at the crack of dawn, try these three things before you accept 5am as your new reality!

👉🏻 Make sure the room is totally dark, free of distracting noises, light, and the room temperature is a comfortable range (68-72 F). Blackout shades, a white noise machine, and an accurate thermostat can help achieve this! The Slumberpod is also a great option for babies 4months+ (use code MYSWEETSLEEP$20)

👉🏻 Increase or decrease day sleep depending on your child’s age and unique needs. Too much day sleep can lead to early risings as it subtracts from your child’s total sleep needs, and not enough can cause your child to be overtired. Try to find that sweet spot! Similarly, you want to try and find a bedtime that works best for your child which could be earlier or later than you are doing now

👉🏻 Don’t take your baby out of their environment until after 6 AM! Even if you have tried everything to get your baby back down and they simply won’t go back to sleep, you could be reinforcing the early rising if you are getting them up, turning on the lights, and starting their day before 6am. You can hold your baby to extend the early rising, feed them, or simply play quietly in their room, or allow them to hang out if they are not upset

If your baby is teething, here are a few things you can do to minimize the sleep disruption…

👉🏻 Help soothe your baby’s gums by giving them a wet wash cloth or natural teething toy during awake periods

👉🏻Nurse more frequently and don’t be afraid to do this during wake ups

👉🏻Comfort your baby but try not to make any major shifts like suddenly co sleeping and certainly no sleep training approaches

👉🏻Contact nap when needed

Remember, the intensity of teething should really only be 3-4 days so if sleep is highly disrupted beyond that it’s likely something else is going on

Did you know that the majority of babies 0-3 months experience a peak fussy period in the evenings between 6-9pm? Often during this time it can feel like nothing is “working” to calm them down which can feel overwhelming for parents!
If this sounds familiar, it is possible that your baby is stuck in what we call the “witching hour”

But don’t worry, it’s not as scary as it sounds! Here are a few things that you can do to help calm your fussy baby during this period...

⭐️Give your baby a warm bath to relax. You can also try rubbing your baby’s head or dabbing their face with a washcloth.

⭐️Babywear. Your baby just spent nine months in your cozy tummy, so they love to be close to you. And as an added bonus, you can have your hands free!

⭐️Allow your baby to nurse more. If this is the only thing that calms your baby, that is okay! Cluster feeding is normal especially in the newborn stage, so no need to stress.

⭐️Walk around while holding your baby. While in the womb, your baby was constantly in motion, so rocking, bouncing, or swaying can help soothe your baby when they are overly fussy. A walk outside is also great!

⭐️Turn on the white noise machine or shush your baby. A consistent sound recreates what your baby heard in your womb. It can also help to block out other stimulating background noises.

⭐️Lower the lights. Newborns are adjusting to all kinds of new things and can easily become overstimulated.

⭐️Utilize appropriate awake windows. Ensuring your little one is not overtired can make your transition to bedtime smoother. Awake windows during the newborn stage are only 60 to 90 minutes, so missing your baby’s ideal sleepy time can increase their fussiness.

⭐️Take a deep breath. If you are upset, your baby can sense this and will react accordingly. If you need to take a break, please do so.

Did you know that the majority of babies 0-3 months experience a peak fussy period in the evenings between 6-9pm? Often during this time it can feel like nothing is “working” to calm them down which can feel overwhelming for parents!
If this sounds familiar, it is possible that your baby is stuck in what we call the “witching hour”

But don’t worry, it’s not as scary as it sounds! Here are a few things that you can do to help calm your fussy baby during this period...

⭐️Give your baby a warm bath to relax. You can also try rubbing your baby’s head or dabbing their face with a washcloth.

⭐️Babywear. Your baby just spent nine months in your cozy tummy, so they love to be close to you. And as an added bonus, you can have your hands free!

⭐️Allow your baby to nurse more. If this is the only thing that calms your baby, that is okay! Cluster feeding is normal especially in the newborn stage, so no need to stress.

⭐️Walk around while holding your baby. While in the womb, your baby was constantly in motion, so rocking, bouncing, or swaying can help soothe your baby when they are overly fussy. A walk outside is also great!

⭐️Turn on the white noise machine or shush your baby. A consistent sound recreates what your baby heard in your womb. It can also help to block out other stimulating background noises.

⭐️Lower the lights. Newborns are adjusting to all kinds of new things and can easily become overstimulated.

⭐️Utilize appropriate awake windows. Ensuring your little one is not overtired can make your transition to bedtime smoother. Awake windows during the newborn stage are only 60 to 90 minutes, so missing your baby’s ideal sleepy time can increase their fussiness.

⭐️Take a deep breath. If you are upset, your baby can sense this and will react accordingly. If you need to take a break, please do so.

The end of daylight saving time is less than one week away and always seems to be a challenging time for parents. As if we don’t have enough change to deal with, this season brings another difficult shift as we move to “shorter days.”

But don’t be afraid! Here’s what we recommend you do to make sure your little doesn’t lose sleep!

1) Start practicing a slightly later bedtime 4-8 days before the time change. To prepare for the “fall back,” you can move your child’s bedtime gradually later (about 10/15 min each night) over the week prior so that they feels ready for sleep once we change the clocks.

2) If your baby is only following awake windows keep doing that and don’t worry about the clock! However, I do recommend an earlier bedtime for all babies 4 months+ in the winter months because of the shift in daylight

3) Be mindful of exposure to sunlight and darkness throughout the day/evening. Our body’s internal sleep cycles (circadian rhythm) are regulated by light and darkness and heavily influenced by our environment. This is why we often become sleepy once it starts to get dark, and many of us wake up with the sun.

4) Prepare a few days before by moving bedtime in larger gaps (20-30 min) leading up to the time change

Remember your child will adjust as they do every year but try to give them grace and remember it will take time

While every child is different, and sleep is complex, here are the most common reasons why your baby might be waking up all night

1) Your baby is chronically overtired. When your baby doesn’t get the day or night sleep they need, it can cause a spike in cortisol and adrenaline, making it harder for your child to get restful sleep. This is why it is important to ensure your baby is getting the sleep they need during the day, to help promote night sleep.

2) Your child is hungry throughout the night. Hunger or comfort nursing is one of the most common reasons that babies wake up all throughout the night. If your child is legitimately hungry, either from not getting enough calories during the day, or because they are going through a growth spurt, they are going to wake up looking for those calories.

3) Your child is struggling to get comfortable or needing comfort. No matter what anyone tries to tell you, it IS normal that your baby doesn’t want to sleep independently. Babies are wired to need co-regulation, which is why most of the time they calm down once you pick them up, rock them, nurse them, etc. just try cycling through different methods!

4) Your child is naturally an attached sleeper. Of the three sleep profiles, attached sleepers usually struggle the most with night wakings, which is partially due to a combination of all of the reasons listed above. And while you can’t change your baby’s temperament, you can work on finding the approach that is most effective for them when it comes to crib exposure and soothing for wake-ups

5) Your child is going through a developmental leap, regression, or progression. In the first 12 months of life your baby is developing rapidly both mentally and physically, which is bound to affect sleep. Whether they are learning a new skill like rolling over, or cutting a tooth, your baby may struggle to settle for sleep when they have so much going on

Is your toddler overtired??

Besides the obvious sign of not meeting the recommended sleep totals, you may discovery that your child is overtired without actually realizing it

This is actually easy to do because overtired signs with toddlers are not always obvious or seem directly correlated with sleep

Here are some common ones…

👉🏻 Lack of coordination. If your child seems to be falling over, running into things, unable to balance, etc these CAN be signs your toddler isn’t getting enough sleep

👉🏻 Meltdowns, especially in the afternoon. Challenging behaviors and meltdowns is one of the most common signs that your toddler is overtired!

👉🏻 Multiple night wakings. While this seems obvious, its important to note that overtiredness can actually CAUSE wakeups leading to a vicious cycle

👉🏻 Burst in energy at bedtime. Parents often mistake this as meaning their child isn’t ready for bed but in reality this is often a burst of adrenaline which easily suppresses melatonin

While there are other signs these tend to be the most common.
